Orthotropics is a type of dentistry that focuses on treating bad bites by guiding the growth and development of facial bones. Orthotropic treatments are most frequently used to help develop better facial features and airways. The ideal candidates for orthotropic treatment are children between the ages of 7 and 10, as their jaws, airways and facial features are still growing and can be more easily guided into optimal positions.
Orthotropic therapy is often recommended to correct poor oral posture, or the way the tongue, teeth and lips are positioned when at rest. An orthotropic appliance optimizes facial development by positioning the upper and lower jaws forward in the face, creating space for the teeth and tongue to correct their positions and prevent any unfavorable growth.
Our dentists will thoroughly evaluate your child’s mouth in order to determine which type of appliance will be most effective for them. The appliance will then be custom made to fit perfectly and provide the guidance needed to ensure proper development of the mouth and jaws. Orthotropic therapy may also be combined with myofunctional training exercises to help your child swallow and perform other muscle functions correctly.
