Dentistry and overall health
Your mouth is a door to the rest of your body, and your oral health is very closely linked to your overall health. In fact, studies have shown significant connections between oral health and systemic medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. By treating dental conditions such as periodontal disease, you can also improve your oral health. Similarly, overall health issues can also cause or exacerbate oral health problems. Our dentists and team make every effort to address your health using holistic approaches, which include nutrition, supplements and other natural treatment options.
Our holistic approach considers the long-term effects of dental treatments on the body. This includes the impact chemicals used in certain materials may have as well as procedures that sometimes produce adverse health effects. When we design your treatment plan, we choose procedures and materials that are safer and healthier for you both now and long-term.
Our dentists and team continually research and train to find the latest and most effective natural methods of treatment so that we can provide you with care that will promote your health. We are also a “green” dental office, working to reduce and eliminate toxic materials and use the most bio-inert and biocompatible products available.

What is Green Dentistry?
Green dentistry is a broad topic that refers to providing care that involves using environmentally friendly products and practices. It places our patients’ well-being at the forefront of our practice so that we can provide high-quality care as well as promote a better environment within and outside of our office.
The Eco Dentistry Association® defines a “green dental practice” as a dental office that:
- Reduces waste and pollution
- Saves water, energy and money
- Incorporates high-tech innovations
- Is wellness-based
Using eco-friendly and non-toxic products benefits the environment as well as your overall health. Our practice uses only non-toxic materials when providing your care and keeping our office and equipment clean. We go the extra mile to eliminate waste by using alternatives to plastic material and recycling whenever possible. We are also careful with our use of vital resources such as water.
Some facts about dental offices
Dental offices generate the following annually:
- Eight million lead foils (used in packaging dental X-ray film)
- 28 million liters of toxic X-ray fixer
- Seven tons of mercury waste
- Seven billion sterilization pouches
- 680 million chair covers, light handle covers and patient bibs
Dental offices also use significant amounts of water, with the average dental practice using as much as 57,000 gallons of water each year. Annapolis Green Dental uses a special dry vacuum system to help reduce the amount of water used in our office.
