New Patient Exam & Natural Teeth Cleanings in Annapolis & Calvert
Comprehensive Exams and Thorough, Natural Cleanings
When you come to our office, we will start with a comprehensive exam to determine the condition of your oral health. We will then use natural, minimally invasive methods to address any issues found. Most patients also get one of our natural cleanings. Our cleanings are performed using state-of-the-art tooth cleaning technology, with materials that are free of toxic chemicals and substances that can be allergenic, such as dyes and gluten.
Our hygienists and staff are friendly and easy to talk to, and they all share Dr. Schultheis’ views and philosophy of providing safe, natural dentistry.
New Patient Exam
Our doctors perform thorough, comprehensive new patient exams that include the following steps.
We will review your medical history, discuss your oral health goals and go over any dental concerns you may have. We will take into account all overall health conditions that could be affecting your oral health, and vice versa.
Full-mouth digital X-rays
We will take full-mouth digital X-rays so the doctor can spot any problems that may not be visible with the naked eye. Our digital X-rays emit 80 percent less radiation than traditional film X-rays and produce detailed images that are immediately available.
3D CT scan, as needed
For certain types of treatment, such as dental implants or a root canal, we may arrange for you to receive a 3D dental CT scan. 3D scans provide clear, 360-degree views of both the hard and soft tissues in your mouth, and are an invaluable tool in the planning of advanced treatment.
We use a mobile 3D scanning service that will come to our office or meet you at a location convenient to you.
Blood pressure evaluation
We will take your blood pressure to help us detect any overall physical conditions that could be adversely affecting your oral and dental health.
If you have frequent headaches or jaw joint problems, or habitually grind your teeth, the doctor will perform a comprehensive bite evaluation, including digital measurements of your bite forces using the T-scan® device. The T-scan device measures how your teeth come together when you close your mouth, and detects any imbalances in your dental forces.
Oral cancer screening
We use the OralID™ fluorescent screening device to detect oral cancer. Oral cancer is highly treatable in its early stages and significantly more difficult to treat later on, so early detection is important.
A screening with OralID is a quick, simple procedure—the device shines a light in your mouth, and abnormal tissue reflects in a different color compared to healthy tissue.
Optional oral health tests
We offer a number of optional tests to get to the bottom of various oral health problems.
For patients with gum disease, we can perform a DNA test to determine the specific species of bacteria that are present in the mouth. We can then apply remedies that specifically target those species.
We also offer tests to determine the pH level in the mouth, and saliva tests that determine the presence of certain diseases and/or your genetic predisposition to certain conditions. Your doctor can provide you with detailed information about our tests during your exam.
Supplements and dietary recommendations
Our doctors are knowledgeable about the effects that diet and supplements can have on oral health. Your doctor will make helpful recommendations about food, supplements and lifestyle changes that can benefit any oral health issues you may need to address.
Non-Toxic, All-Natural Teeth Cleanings
We provide gentle and thorough teeth cleanings using non-toxic products that are free of artificial chemicals. We use natural supplements and cold-pressed anti-bacterial oils to help eliminate bacteria and enhance overall oral health. All products used during your maintenance appointments are dye-free, gluten-free, and made of plant-based substances.

We use ultrasonic scalers for safe and efficient removal of bacterial deposits. Ultrasonic scalers use small tips that require very little pressure, making cleaning more comfortable than traditional scalers. They are especially effective at removing heavily built-up plaque and tartar. Additionally, ultrasonic scalers act to detoxify the areas being treated. The ultrasonic scaler uses a stream of warm water that interacts with the vibrating scaler tip to produce bursts of energy that tear apart the bacteria cell wall, effectively eliminating the bacteria.
Patient education & nutritional recommendations
Our hygienists are knowledgeable and experienced in holistic care, and will recommend products you can use at home to optimize your oral health between visits. They will also make any dietary and supplement recommendations that could benefit your oral and dental health.
