Beautiful, All-Porcelain Crowns in One Visit

Porcelain dental crown.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a natural tooth.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a natural tooth. It is used to restore a tooth that is decayed or broken-down. It can also be used cosmetically to change the color, length or shape of a tooth.

Dr. Schultheis can provide metal-free, all-ceramic crowns right in our office, using our CEREC (CEramic REConstrution) 3D computer-aided design and milling system for dental restorations. The CEREC system creates high-quality, biocompatible porcelain crowns that are shade-matched to your other teeth. The crowns look completely natural and fit perfectly in your bite.

With CEREC, Dr. Schultheis can take impressions, fully fabricate and then place permanent crowns on your teeth—all in a single visit. You won’t have to come in for a second appointment or wear any plastic temporary restorations that can irritate the gums.

Biocompatibility testing available

Dr. Schultheis provides the option of taking a small sample of your blood to be used for a personalized biocompatibility test at a special lab. The lab can determine which of our porcelain materials will be the most compatible for you.

Our One-Visit Crowns Procedure With CEREC

The CEREC system uses digital technology for every step of the process. Due to the speed and accuracy of the system, Dr. Schultheis is able to design, fabricate and place your final crown in as little as two hours.

Easy and accurate digital impressions

Using the CEREC system, we can digitally scan and design your new crown.

Dr. Schultheis first takes an impression of your teeth using a 3D digital impression scanner. Digital scans are much more comfortable than traditional goopy impressions. They are also more accurate, as they capture all the surfaces of your teeth without any distortion.

Designing your new crown

Dr. Schultheis designs your crown using special 3D software that is part of the CEREC system. The software converts the digital impression data into a highly accurate, three-dimensional virtual model of your teeth. Your crown will be designed so it will fit correctly, have the correct bite surfaces and blend in with your other natural teeth.

Custom milling your crown

We use our CEREC milling unit to fabricate your new crown out of a single block of high-grade porcelain while you wait.

Dr. Schultheis will use our CEREC milling unit to fabricate your new crown out of a single block of high-grade porcelain which is shade-matched to your natural teeth. The specific porcelain we use is biocompatible, and has the same characteristics as natural dental enamel. It expands and contracts as natural teeth do with temperature changes.

These crowns are also less prone to cracks and flaws than crowns made by other methods, as they are milled out of a single block of porcelain.

Final adjustment and fitting

Using the CEREC system, Dr. Schultheis can make any necessary final adjustments right in our office—in a matter of minutes. She will place your permanent crown during the same visit. There will be no need for another appointment and you won’t have to wear a plastic temporary crown.

One-Visit “Partial Coverage” Crowns

Tooth inlay

“Partial coverage” crowns can be used to repair tooth damage that is too big for a filling, but not big enough to require that the tooth be completely covered.

Dr. Schultheis can make “partial coverage” crowns using the CEREC system. These are restorations that repair tooth damage that is too big for a filling, but not big enough to require that the tooth be completely covered.

When the restoration is made for the grooves between the cusps (highest points) of the tooth, it is known as an inlay. A restoration that fits over one or more of the cusps is called an onlay. Dr. Schultheis creates inlays and onlays out of the same high-quality, shade-matched porcelain as full-coverage crowns.

Lab-Created Crowns in 72 Hours

Although the CEREC system works perfectly for the vast majority of our patients, there are some situations where the crown would need to be fabricated in a lab and returned to us. We work with top-quality labs that can create all-porcelain crowns that meet our exact specifications.

These labs can also have the crowns ready in only 72 hours (three days). This is four to five times faster than the normal lab turnaround time. This also means that even if you need a lab-created restoration, you are only wearing a temporary for a very short period.

Benefits and Advantages of the CEREC System

  • Fast: CEREC restorations can be designed, milled and placed in one visit. You won’t need to wear plastic temporaries or come back for additional appointments.
  • Durable and biocompatible: Since CEREC restorations are made out of a single block of porcelain, they do not crack or break easily and are very durable. They are also metal-free and non-toxic.
  • Natural-looking and aesthetic: Your restorations are made out of porcelain that is shade-matched to your natural teeth, and has the same translucence as natural tooth material. This creates a very aesthetic and natural look.
  • Precise matching: CEREC restorations are computer-designed to precisely match the contours, size and shape of the adjacent teeth; they look exactly like a real tooth and fit perfectly in your smile.
