Natural, Holistic Gum Disease Treatment in Annapolis & Calvert
Gentle, Effective Treatment for Mild to Severe Gum Disease
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of bacteria that cause irritation and inflammation. If not treated, these bacteria multiply and the disease progresses to a point where it starts causing damage to the gum tissue and the underlying bone. It can eventually result in the loss of one or more teeth. Dr. Schultheis is experienced in the treatment of every stage of gum disease, from mild to severe.
Dr. Schultheis uses effective holistic methods in the treatment of gum disease, not only getting the infection under control but also addressing any underlying dietary issues that may be causing or contributing to the condition. She uses lasers to assist in fully eliminating the bacteria. The lasers also promote healing and the regeneration of healthy gum tissue.
Our Effective, Natural Gum Disease Procedures
Comprehensive exam & consultation
Dr. Schultheis will conduct a comprehensive oral exam to determine the extent of any gum disease you may have. She will consult with you and review your dental and medical history.
Saliva and oral DNA testing
Your hygienist will take a sample of your saliva to test the pH level. pH measures alkalinity and acidity. The lower the pH value, the higher the acidity. Your saliva’s pH level will help us evaluate your gum disease.
We also offer oral DNA testing to identify the species of bacteria most prevalent in your gum disease. These tests assist us in establishing the best treatment path.
The relation of overall health to gum disease
Research has shown that gum disease can be related to health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. Gum disease can have a negative impact on those conditions, and these health conditions can also affect your oral health. In some cases, Dr. Schultheis might recommend blood work with your physician to see if there is any systemic condition that is contributing to your gum disease. As well as coordinating with your physician as necessary, Dr. Schultheis can provide dietary and supplement recommendations to assist in controlling your gum disease.

In order to eliminate the inflammation and bacterial infection, it is necessary to remove the hard deposits of plaque that have lodged under your gumline. Our hygienists use ultrasonic scalers to gently and effectively remove these deposits in a comfortable manner. The energy bursts generated by the ultrasonic vibrations are also highly effective in killing the disease-causing bacteria.
After ultrasonic scaling, Dr. Schultheis uses a dental laser to eliminate any remaining bacteria. Treatment with the laser also stimulates the natural healing capabilities of the gum tissue.

Periodyne® natural oils
Periodyne is a patented blend of natural oils that patients apply to their gums at home as a supplemental treatment. Periodyne reduces inflammation and bleeding of the gums, and creates the right set of circumstances for the gum tissue to heal itself.
As part of your treatment, we use oral probiotics to promote the growth of healthy bacteria. It is important to have plenty of healthy bacteria in your mouth to crowd out the bad bacteria that cause gum disease.
Patient education and nutritional recommendations
We will educate you on good home oral care practices so you can keep your gums in good condition after treatment. As part of this, we will give you dietary and supplement recommendations that will prevent your gum disease from recurring.
For patients whose condition is very severe and do not respond to natural treatment, Dr. Schultheis can also perform traditional flap surgery. In a few extreme cases, this may be necessary to remove bacteria that are lodged very deep under the gumline.
Gum & bone grafting
If gum disease is left untreated, it gradually eats away at the gum and bone tissue, and can cause significant damage. We will first treat your gum disease and get the inflammation and infection under control. If necessary, we can then perform gum and bone grafting to restore any gum and bone tissue that was lost.
